Is an Up-Cutter Right for Your CNC Job?
An up-cutter should be used when efficient chip removal is the priority — generally when cutting non-abrasive, heat-sensitive materials, including thermoplastics and even non-ferrous metals, such as aluminium. It's upward-spiral design pulls chips out of the cut, reducing heat buildup and preventing re-cutting of material. Up-cutters also produce an excellent bottom edge finish and help maintain consistent cutting accuracy over longer runs.
However, an up-cutter isn’t always the best choice when surface finish matters. Because it pulls material upward, it can cause tear-out or splintering on the top surface—especially on plywood, veneered panels, or laminated boards. The upward cutting force can also stress lighter vacuum setups. In these cases, a down-cutter or compression cutter is often the better option for achieving a clean top edge and a more controlled cut.
