What is Micro-Grain Solid Carbide?
Micrograin solid carbide uses carbide grains down to 0.5 to 0.8 microns, versus 2 to 5 microns in standard carbide. Finer grain means a harder edge without the usual loss in toughness, so it resists chipping and heat softening under load. Result: the edge stays sharp and accurate far longer, especially when compared to standard solid carbide bits.
These compression bits are built for CNC and router applications requiring high feed rates and clean compression cuts. They work great across wood sheet materials, giving a consistent edge on both the top and bottom of the panel.
The bit can also be used as a pocketing tool, provided the pocket is deep enough to engage both the up cut and down cut portions, which ensures a clean finish. That engagement depth varies tool to tool depending on cutting length.

Solid bits and great advice from company
Always had trouble with bits lasting on MFC, but I have to say these are phenomenal, we are just a small workshop in North Wales.
Used to chip MFC after just a few sheets, these bits last longer. feed and speed advice very helpful
Been buying these 10mm bits for a while good bits and arrive fast.
They ship from manchester. Bits are great and service is class.
I thought the claims were to good to be true, and the tests had been done on simple toolpaths, turns out they are great. I recommend them for MFC.
As you all know MFC can be a nightmaree to cut, these are the best bits I have found for it.
Bits last ages and feed and speed suppor is a nice touch.
Best quality bits I have used in 10 odd years, and the feed and speed advice is brilliant, nothing more to say.
I have tried all the sizes of this compression cutter, and they don't snap. Very rigid design.
CNC team over the moon with the performance. I will be buying again when needed
I cut plenty of MFC sheets at 18mm per pass, and I have used even more aggressive feeds than they recommend and they still hold up, very good stuff.
Frequently Asked Questions
Yes, this works with every 3 axis CNC machine. This compression cutter has a standard 10mm shank, so if your machine takes a 10mm collet, it's ready to run — including on Axyz, Multicam, AXIOM, ShopBot, CNC Router Parts, Avid CNC, Weeke/Homag, SCM, Biesse Rover and every other 3-Axis CNC machine. Still not sure? Email: info@routerbits.co.uk and we'll confirm before you order.
Yes, this will work with any collet that accepts a 10mm shank, including ER32, ER25 and ER20 collet types. Not sure what your machine uses? Email info@routerbits.co.uk and we'll confirm before you order.
Yes — we market this specifically for MFC because it's such an abrasive material to cut, but this cutter performs across all standard wood materials any compression cutter handles, including MDF, plywood, solid timber, veneered boards and melamine faced chipboard. The Micro-Grain Solid Carbide™ edge holds up across all of these, resisting the wear that abrasive boards like MFC cause and staying sharper for longer on softer materials like ply and solid wood too.
Designed entirely in house, right here in the UK, from our base in South Wales.
Shipped from our warehouse in Manchester — same day dispatch on working day orders, or the next working day otherwise.
Yes — we offer next day delivery, and it's free on orders over £100.

We Spent 18 Hours Testing The Top 4 Main 10mm Compression Cutters
Looking to cut more chip-free MFC sheets per 10mm compression bit you use?
Want to spend less time with paint or Tipp-Ex trying to cover up the damage, with your fingers crossed the customer never notices?
Searching for a solution that delivers consistently crisp finishes — and one that actually lasts?
If you nodded yes to any of these, you’ve come to the right place.
We spent just over 2 full working days testing the main 4 types of carbide used in 10mm compression cutters to understand which actually lasts when cutting MFC.
We all know MFC is a pain to cut. Its abrasive melamine surface and dense resin-bound core chew through cutting edges fast, dulling tools and eventually leaving the ragged, chipped-out finish nobody wants.
Ever since RouterBits.co.uk launched in 2025, I’ve been interested to see how their Micro-Grain Solid Carbide™ 10mm compression cutters held up against the main alternatives on the market.
I’m always testing CNC tools, and I’ve usually learned the hard way that they’re not always as good as they’re advertised to be.
Our testing revealed what many of us already know: the biggest brands aren't always the best — and neither is the most expensive.
RouterBits' Micro-Grain Solid Carbide™ 10mm Compression Cutter won on the things that actually matter:
- Sheets per tool before chip-out
- Real cost per sheet — tool price divided by sheets cut before chip-out
- Cutter-tip chip resistance
How we tested
We cut as many 8 × 4 ft, 18mm MFC sheets as possible using the same toolpath, tracking cut quality sheet by sheet.
After every sheet, we checked both the top and bottom edges for chip-out under the same lighting conditions.
Every cutter was also run using the same feed rate, spindle speed and depth per pass to keep the comparison as fair as possible.
We ran each cutter until the edges chipped out badly enough that we could no longer call the finish usable, or until the amount of clean-up required simply wasn't worth continuing.

What Is Micro-Grain Solid Carbide™?
Carbide ground to a finer grain than standard carbide. Tightly packed, finer grains form a denser structure that holds a sharper edge for longer, resists chipping under load, and delivers consistent chip free cuts through resin heavy sheet material such as MFC.
Standard solid carbide is less dense. That means a cutter more prone to chipping and dulling, which is what causes sheets like MFC to chip out and become unusable.
Micro-Grain Solid Carbide™ won't stop wear. Nothing does. But the finer grain gives the edge extra lifespan, holding chip free cuts for longer.
Our whole compression cutter range is designed here in Britain, built and refined against real feedback from cabinet makers, joiners, and kitchen makers.
We believe we've built the single best 10mm compression cutter on the market for cutting MFC and we have received the feedback to justify our claims.
