Why ball nose cutters?

A ball nose cutter is used for 3D contouring, sculpted surfaces, and rounded or blended profiles that a flat-end tool simply can't produce cleanly.

It's most commonly reached for in mould and pattern making, sign and relief carving, 3D machining, and any job needing smooth curved transitions or fine surface detail rather than sharp internal corners.

It performs well across a wide range of materials, including wood, MDF, plastics, aluminium, and other soft-to-medium metals, wherever a rounded tip and consistent scallop finish are needed for the final surface.

Compression Cutter

Why Our Ball Nose?

  • Built to resist snapping/chipping under higher feed rates, getting you through each job faster.
  • Our edge holds sharpness for longer, so you get consistent finish, not a cliff-edge drop-off
  • Engineered flute geometry clears chips fast, so nothing gets re-cut or overheated
  • Tested and proven to considerably outlast standard 'solid carbide' bits.
  • Expect a clear improvement in sheet count per bit over any compression cutter you've used before.
Details

Check out our Micro Grain Solid Carbide Ball Nose Cutter, featuring 2 flutes and built to outlast standard solid carbide bits, a claim we've tested meticulously to back up. Available in sizes from 1mm to 6mm cutting diameter with a range of cutting lengths to match.

What is Micro-Grain Solid Carbide?

Micrograin solid carbide uses carbide grains down to 0.5 to 0.8 microns, versus 2 to 5 microns in standard carbide. Finer grain means a harder edge without the usual loss in toughness, so it resists chipping and heat softening under load. Result: the edge stays sharp and accurate far longer, especially when compared to standard solid carbide bits.

These ball nose bits are built for CNC and router applications requiring high feed rates and high performance. They work great across wood, MDF, plastics and aluminium, giving a smooth, consistent finish on curved and contoured surfaces.

Ran it hard for two weeks and the edge is still sharp. No sudden drop off like my old bits.

Great bit overall, held up well through a full batch of laminate sheets. One very minor chip on a corner but nothing that affected the part.
